A leisurely journey visiting Atlantic Canada’s many National Parks and National Historic Sites. Journey through time with stops at Lunenberg’s restored Victorian era town, Fredericton’s historic Garrison District and the Fortress of Louisbourg where costumed actors re-enact life as it was in the 1700’s. Visit quaint and colourful fishing and seaside villages such as Peggy’s Cove and take in beautiful landscapes such as those on Prince Edward Island - made famous by the popular series ‘Anne of Green Gables’ - and the drive around Cape Breton Island, the ‘Cabot Trail’. Get back to nature and hike through pristine forests or along spectacular coastlines, or take to the water on a whale watching cruise or sea kayaking on the Bay of Fundy.

Itinerary

After your arrival at Halifax Airport, collect your rental vehicle and make your way to your downtown hotel. Halifax was first settled in 1749, so is steeped in maritime and immigration history, which is depicted in several museums and attractions.
Spend the day exploring Halifax at your leisure. Stroll along the waterfront boardwalk and stop by the boutiques, pubs and cafes of Privateers Warehouse and Historic Properties. Take in the fabulous views of Halifax Harbour from the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site and visit Fisherman’s Cove, a restored 200-year-old fishing village.
Leaving Halifax this morning we suggest stopping at Peggy’s Cove where the houses are built right in to the granite rocks; the area is also famous for Peggy’s Point Lighthouse. Continue on to Lunenburg, a lovingly restored Victorian era town which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can still see tall ships moored off the port. Hotel – Boscawen Inn
Drive across the peninsula to Annapolis Royal, stop at Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site with its lush forests, crystal clear lakes and meandering rivers. The park offers hiking trails as well as kayaking and canoeing, for coastal scenery head down to Kejimkujik Seaside. The waterfront community of Annapolis Royal features well-preserved heritage buildings and a designated National Historic District.
Board the Fundy Rose for the three-hour ferry crossing from Digby, Nova Scotia to Saint John, New Brunswick. Watch for whales breaching off-shore and stop to take in the views along the Fundy Coastal Drive. Arrive in one of Canada’s most picturesque resorts, St. Andrews by-the-Sea.
St. Andrews offers a range of attractions including the award-winning Kingsbrae Gardens and historical sites such as the Blockhouse and the Charlotte County Courthouse and Old Gaol. St. Andrews is of course popular with golfers, who can enjoy playing a round at the Algonquin Resort. Other popular activities include sea kayaking, whale watching and sailing trips out in to the Bay of Fundy.
Drive east to City of Saint John, world-famous for its Reversing Falls Rapids—the colossal, tidal tug-of-war between the Bay of Fundy and the St. John River. Twice daily at high tide, the powerful Fundy waters roar into the Saint John River. The titanic clash of natural forces causes the river to reverse direction.
Travel along the scenic Fundy Coastal Drive, stopping to experience sea kayaking at St. Martin Sea Caves or hiking the Fundy Trail. Experience the thrill of a lifetime on the zip line or rappelling at Cape Enrage. Hopewell Rocks are unique formations carved by thousands of years of erosion; here you can witness the world’s highest tides. If time permits, end the day with a visit to Magnetic Hill Winery.
Drive east to Shediac, known as The Lobster capital of the world and famous for its Lobster Festival, which normally takes place each year at the beginning of July. Enjoy a 2.5-hour boat cruise (cruises run 30 June – 1 September), learning about the life of the lobster, hauling in lobster traps and feasting on a delicious lobster meal. Continue across Confederation Bridge to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.Hotel – The Great George
Spend the day exploring Prince Edward Island’s capital city of Charlottetown. A favourite spot to enjoy lunch or dinner is down at Peake’s Wharf Historic Waterfront where you can feast on locally caught lobster and seafood. The city offers historical landmarks including Beaconsfield Historic House, a fine example of Victorian architecture or the Romanesque City Hall. Hotel – The Great George
Prince Edward Island offers spectacular coastal vistas, scenic farmland and rolling hills made famous by novelist Lucy Maud Montgomery in the popular series “Anne of Green Gables”. Prince Edward Island has almost 700-miles of coastline, much of which is pristine beach. For a slower pace of life, you can hire a bike and follow some of the Confederation Trail which follows a former railway system. Hotel – The Great George
Baddeck, Nova Scotia
Drive to Wood Islands Ferry where you cross the Northumberland Strait to Caribou, Nova Scotia. Stop at Hector Heritage Quay to visit the full-scale replica of the three-masted cargo vessel, Hector. Take the Casno Causeway over to Cape Breton Island and to Baddeck that overlooks the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes. Hotel – Inverary Resort
Louisbourg, Nova Scotia
Discover the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, an impressive restoration of a 1700’s French garrison town with animators re-enacting life as it would have been in 1744. The Graham Bell National Historic Site is the only museum in the world that displays actual artefacts and memorabilia associated to Graham Bell’s inventions and experiments. Hotel – Inverary Resort
Ingonish, Nova Scotia
Follow the Cabot Trail, one of Canada’s most spectacular drives that winds and twists its way around the rocky splendour of Cape Breton’s northern shore and through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Hike through stunning mountain and coastal landscapes along any of the 26 trails, ranging from short walks to challenging hikes.
Liscomb Mills, Nova Scotia
Cross the Canso Causeway and drive along the Eastern Shore along the Marine Drive Route with its rugged coastline, tranquil bays and unspoiled forest. Stop at Sherbrooke Village with its carefully preserved historic homes and where you can experience life in the 1800’s with costumed interpreters re-enacting life as it was in the golden years.
Enjoy a leisurely drive to Halifax, taking the opportunity to stop at Musquodoboit Harbour and Valley and Martinique Beach Provincial Park with Nova Scotia’s longest sandy beach.
Drive to Halifax Airport to return your rental vehicle and take your flight back to the UK.
