This eight-day cruise along America’s largest and most historic river takes you on an enchanting journey through the unique atmosphere of the Deep South, from Memphis to New Orleans.

Explore Memphis, the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll and visit one of Elvis Presley’s former homes, Graceland - an absolute must for all music lovers. You will also get the chance to sail the mighty Mississippi River on the gracious American Queen Steamboat, listening to stories about the history of music, slavery and the Civil War from the on-board Riverlorian, an expert in the Deep South’s history and culture.

Each port of call can be explored on an American Queen shore excursion, showcasing Mississippi’s great river cities and giving you a chance to get closer to the fascinating history and culture of the region. Finish your tour with two nights in the vibrant city of New Orleans, sampling its unique southern cuisine, live music and vibrant nightlife.

 

Itinerary

Fly from the UK to Memphis, the home of the blues and birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. Transfer to your city hotel and enjoy the rest of the evening exploring the live music scene and sampling some of the Deep South’s world-famous cuisine.
This morning is yours to explore the city. You may wish to join American Queen’s Memphis City and Graceland Mansion Premium Shore Excursion, a one-of-a-kind self-guided iPad tour through Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley. At the end of the tour you can stroll through the peaceful Meditation Garden, the final resting place of ‘The King’. Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Greenville, Mississippi
Today you will arrive in Greenville, an area of historic cotton plantations and the heart and soul of the Mississippi Delta. This area has an incredible artistic legacy with legendary blues artist, B.B. King being born in nearby Indianola, as was Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets! Greenville also has several museums of note, including the Greenville History Museum with memorabilia and artefacts dating back to the 1800’s. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Vicksburg, Mississippi
Founded in 1811, and described by Abraham Lincoln as the ‘Key to the South’, this southern town is steeped in Civil War history. American Queen includes several shore excursions based around its history, including a visit to Anchuca Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the ‘happy home’ provided shelter for those who had suffered in the Civil War. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Natchez, Mississippi
Founded in 1716, Natchez is the oldest city on the Mississippi River. This southern town is rich in culture and exhibits several architectural influences left by African, French, British and Spanish descendants over the years. Visit mansions and museums on one of American Queen’s included shore excursions, or pre-book a Premium Shore Excursions to discover the Hollywood parties that took place at ‘The Towers’. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Today you leave the state of Mississippi and arrive at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The city is home to the United States’ largest Capitol building and some fascinating wartime artefacts. An optional Premium Shore Excursion can be pre-booked to visit some of the South’s most famous plantations such as Houmas House and Oak Valley Plantation. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
St. Francisville, Louisiana
Royal Street, in the historic district of St. Francisville, is lined with buildings that date from the 19th to early 20th centuries. Today’s optional Premium Shore Excursion takes you on a tour of ‘Redemption and Rehabilitation’ at the maximum-security Angola Prison. Hear stories about what was once America’s most dangerous penitentiary. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and Dinner.
Nottoway, Louisiana
Visit the South’s most impressive and largest Antebellum mansion, Nottoway Plantation. Nicknamed ‘The White Castle of Louisiana’ for its decadent grandeur and 22 white square columns, this mansion boasts 64 bedrooms spread across three floors. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the plantation house followed by a stroll through the manicured gardens and two-hundred-year-old oak trees. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Your Mississippi River cruise ends in the vibrant city of New Orleans. Check-in to your New Orleans hotel for your two-night city break. Soak up the vibrant atmosphere, enjoy the lively music scene and indulge in the famous cuisine. As night draws in, the city’s French Quarter comes alive with over 200 bars, jazz clubs and restaurants.
Today is yours to explore New Orleans at your own pace. You may wish to arrange an optional air-boat ride through the lush marshes of wild bayou country. On this adventure you can spot an abundance of bird life and wildlife such as alligators, beavers and snakes. ‘Haunted’ tours of New Orleans’ cemeteries and the back streets of the French Quarter are a popular activity.
Transfer to New Orleans Airport for your flight back to the UK.
